今回の飛行機模型スペシャルは２大特集！巻頭特集では、新発売されたボーダーモデルの1/35スケール「日本海軍 空母 赤城 艦橋 w/飛行甲板＋九七式艦上攻撃機」を集中解説！飛行機モデラーも艦船モデラーも注目のニューキット、その魅力、その攻略法を解説。 第２特集では、その原型機の初飛行から70年が経ち、今なお現役の「ボーイングC-135 / C-137シリーズ」を採り上げる。このシリーズ、よく混同されるが、厳密にいうとそれぞれ別の機体で、ベースになった機体が異なる。アメリカ初のジェット輸送機の試作機・ボーイング367-80をベースにして、空中給油機として採用されたのが「KC-135」。そのボーイング367-80をベースにして、胴体の拡張などを施して作られたのがジェット旅客機のボーイング707で、これをベースに改造、軍用輸送機に転用したのが「C-137」。どちらも純粋な物資輸送機として充分な飛行性能、ペイロードを持っていたが、荷役の際にロールオン／ロールオフが出来るカーゴドアとランプが無かった。そのため輸送機としての寿命は短かったが、空中給油機や電子戦、偵察機、空中指揮機、アメリカ合衆国大統領専用機、要人輸送機、早期警戒管制機といった派生型が多く作られている。こちらでは各社各スケールの作例を交え、C-135 / C-137シリーズを詳細に解説していきます。

The second feature explores the 70-year legacy of the "Boeing C-135 / C-137 series," which, although often confused, are distinct aircraft with different base models. The KC-135, an air refueling aircraft, was based on the Boeing 367-80 prototype, while the C-137, a military transport, evolved from the Boeing 707. Despite their differences, both aircraft series showcased impressive flight performance and payload capacities. However, their lack of roll-on/roll-off cargo doors and ramps limited their lifespans as pure transporters. Nevertheless, many derivatives have been developed, including roles such as air refueling, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, airborne command posts, Air Force One, VIP transport, and early warning aircraft.
