■特 集：天下第一艦 航空母艦 大鳳
1944年6月19日、マリアナ諸島の覇権をかけて日米両海軍が激突したマリアナ沖海戦から、今年で80周年を迎えました。この海戦で帝国海軍の総旗艦を務めたのは、新鋭空母「大鳳」でした。運命とは非情なもので、敵潜水艦から放たれた魚雷1本が命中すると、航空用ガソリンタンクから漏洩したガスに引火し、大爆発を起こして沈没。就役期間わずか3ヵ月の艦歴を閉じました。本艦は短命に終わったのと、戦後の混乱により残された資料が乏かったため、長年に亘り船体形状と飛行甲板の被覆材が何であるかの研究が、艦艇研究家によって行われています。そこで、今月号では「大鳳」の飛行甲板と、日本空母の飛行甲板に施された特殊塗料の最新考察を交えながら、「大鳳」の真相に迫ります。

This year marks the 80th anniversary since the Battle of the Philippine Sea, fought between the Japanese and American navies over the Marianas Islands on June 19, 1944. During this battle, the flagship of the Imperial Navy was the newly commissioned aircraft carrier "Taiho." Tragically, fate was cruel, as a single torpedo from an enemy submarine struck, igniting leaked aviation fuel and causing a massive explosion, leading to its sinking. The ship’s service life was only three months. Due to its brief existence and the post-war chaos, there has been limited material left, and for many years, naval researchers have studied the ship’s hull shape and the materials used for its flight deck covering. In this issue, we delve into the truth about "Taiho" by exploring its flight deck and the latest research on the special paint used on Japanese aircraft carriers.
