● 特 集：鉄底海峡物語
今から80 年ほど前、南太平洋ソロモン諸島のサボ島、フロリダ諸島南方、ガダルカナル島北方の間に位置する海峡では、連合国軍に奪取されたガダルカナル島の飛行場の奪還を目指す大日本帝国海軍と、本格的に対日反攻戦を開始した米・英・豪の連合国艦隊との間で幾多の海戦が生起した。それらの海戦で犠牲になった艦船や航空機の残骸が海底を埋め尽くしていることから「アイアンボトム・サウンド」（Iron bottom Sound）と名付けられ、その訳語として我が国では“ 鉄底海峡”と呼ばれている。今月号では鉄底海峡に沈んだ日米の艦船の中から、エピソードに富んだ艦船を作例で紹介する。

About 80 years ago, in a strait located between Savo Island, in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific, south of the Florida Islands, and north of Guadalcanal Island, numerous naval battles occurred between the Imperial Japanese Navy, aiming to recapture the airfield on Guadalcanal seized by the Allied forces, and the Allied fleets of the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, who had commenced a full-scale counteroffensive against Japan.
Due to the wreckage of ships and aircraft lost in these battles that now litter the seabed, this area came to be known as "Iron Bottom Sound." In our country, it's referred to as the "鉄底海峡" (Iron Bottom Strait) as a translation. This month's issue features exemplary stories of Japanese and American ships sunk in Iron Bottom Sound.
